Torrential Downpours Worsen Conditions for Uprooted Residents of Gaza, Officials Caution
Intense storms over the last seven days have intensified the already dire circumstances of the hundreds of thousands of uprooted Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as stated by relief organizations.
"Awful" Weather Brings Serious Threats
A official described the recent storm as "awful", with downpours so intense that around 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the ground.
"The recent weather was really terrible for the residents. The downpours were so intense... And the winds were so forceful," said the official.
Authorities voice significant concern that children residing in temporary structures in soaked clothing will contract hypothermia and various illnesses.
Fatalities and Significant Damage
Medical officials have stated that one baby has died from the cold and a minimum of 11 other people have been killed in roof cave-ins caused by the storms.
Further statements indicate a higher death toll. Authorities stated that numerous homes had collapsed completely and many others had collapsed partially.
- Almost 55,000 families impacted by the weather.
- More than 40 emergency safe spaces inundated.
- Countless residents forced to relocate again.
Assistance Distribution Seen as Not Enough
Groups have increased deliveries of tents, blankets and clothes following the ceasefire began, but they emphasize there is still not enough aid entering.
"Agencies are striving constantly to deliver that assistance and to distribute it, but the size of the necessities is so immense that we are faced with many thousands of families and children who are genuinely suffering nightly," cautioned one representative.
Long-Term Challenges and Ceasefire Plans
The second phase of the truce involves proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the removal of troops, and other provisions.
Relief organizations have underscored the necessity for "greater and continuous humanitarian assistance to meet urgent and long-term needs."
The conflict was initiated by an offensive in October 2023. Following campaigns have led to a high number of lives lost in the area, according to health ministry figures.
