The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Ashes Team

England have chosen a 12-man squad just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected spot.

Bashir's inclusion indicates that the tourists will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man squad, indicating there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s condition.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with Carse most likely to miss out if the spinner makes the starting XI.

Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged several past matches.

During these matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers is still the probable decision.

Spin Options Considered

Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to provide some spin while also strengthening the lower order.

But the coach has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.

In July, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.

“I won't reveal my strategies so they perform and perform well out here.”
