The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
