The Mystery Within that Briefcase Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison forged from the past of Vecna. Their mission for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—an event that could contain the secret to his downfall permanently.
Heads Up: The following contains major spoilers for the second part of the final season.
Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points this season, the truth about the mine shaft incident originates in the theatrical production The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their parallel research. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.
So, What's in the Case?
Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the control of a sinister presence, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the Mind Flayer in the past.
Confronting Terror
Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.
Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the ultimate battle ahead.
