The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
