Prisons Won't Be Fixed Overnight, Government Official States, while Police Hunt For Two Men Mistakenly Released
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has described the situation as a "total shambles," commenting earlier today.
Speaking during a radio program, he referenced comments made by David Lammy after a recent inmate discharge, stating that Lammy would establish stricter verifications.
"There was a delay of six days for the prison service supposedly to realize this occurred" and inform the police, Jenrick says, "who are now a week late in the search to find him."
The shadow minister condemns Lammy's performance during recent PMQs and alleges him of a "total dereliction of duty."
Speaking about mistaken prison releases in broader terms, Jenrick underlines that "each mistaken discharge [...] is unforgivable."
He admits there were such releases under the previous Conservative government, but claims the figure "has increased dramatically" under the current government.
Calling for additional correctional facilities to be constructed, he continues: "The public expect now are proper checks put in place."
"This represents a particular administrative failure by the Ministry of Justice supervised by David Lammy," the opposition member concludes.
