Line of Duty Announced for Seventh Season on the British Broadcaster
The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-part season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
New Character and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.
Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."
He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Series Legacy
The drama launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.
The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.
The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
