Citizens have gathered across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The attack led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed official commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the families of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' representatives gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A prominent delegate involved in the talks said that an late session of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.

The representative stated the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, because of differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are striving to close the disparities between the two sides.

Essential Issues in Talks

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance distribution
  • Post-war management of the area

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No place seems like home anymore and until every captive return none of us will be secure."

"When we see all home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.

In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be secure."

Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of the population prefer the war to conclude in as payment for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of the gathering, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"Once the night comes, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Medical Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had taken in the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area said another two dead people had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the south region, health workers reported.
