Iranian forces say they have struck a US naval base in Manama, as Iran launched missile attacks across the region in response for a large-scale and ongoing attack targeting the nation by the US and Israel.

Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an area near the headquarters of the American Fifth Fleet in Bahrain's capital, Manama. The extent of any impact is uncertain and the American officials has not commented.

That US-Israeli operation - initiated at around 06:15 GMT - has so far targeted areas associated with the Iranian leadership, with President Trump urging the Iranian people to revolt against the government.

In Israel, air raid sirens sounded nationwide after the Israeli military said it had detected an barrage of missiles from Iran.

The defence ministry of the United Arab Emirates stated that the nation has been subjected to a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"UAE air defence systems engaged the missiles with high efficiency and destroyed a series of missiles," the statement continued.

Officials reported wreckage fell on a populated district in Abu Dhabi, resulting in some property damage and killing a civilian.

The United States Air Force is stationed at Al Dhafra Air Base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the UAE Air Force.
