Federal Government Closure Sets New Milestone as Most Extended in American Records
The US federal closure has entered its 36th day, establishing it as the longest duration of federal shutdown in American history.
This shutdown, which began on 1 October, was caused by lawmakers' failure to reach a new funding deal. This has resulted in government workers without paychecks and millions of Americans without critical government services.
Political parties have remained gridlocked for weeks without indications of agreement - although faint signs of progress are starting to emerge.
"I just think, from my gut of how these situations work, I believe we're approaching an solution here," a senior Republican commented.
The former government shutdown record occurred during President Trump's initial presidency and continued for 35 days before it ended in the year 2019.
Growing Consequences on Citizens
In the weeks since this shutdown started, the consequences on everyday Americans have intensified.
Thousands of federal workers have already missed their salaries, and there are increasing concerns about disruptions in air travel across the US as air traffic controllers and airport staff work without pay.
"If you bring us to next week, you will see widespread disruption," a transportation official warned. "Expect extensive flight delays. You'll see numerous cancellations, and we might need to shut down sections of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it as we don't have air traffic control staff."
Nutrition Benefits Crisis
The impacts have particularly affected by economically vulnerable citizens who rely on government services.
One in eight people in the US are reliant upon food assistance from the SNAP program, but only a portion of that assistance is being paid out this month due to lapsed funding.
The previous administration had - at first - said no food assistance money would be distributed in the month of November but a US court mandated that contingency funds be used to give people some assistance.
"[Snap benefits] will be given only when the Radical Left Democrats open up government, something they can readily accomplish, and not before," the former president posted on social media.
Political Deadlock
Members of the American Senate have considered the identical temporary budget measure to reopen the government repeatedly with unsuccessful results. Attempts were made again on Tuesday to without success.
The legislation was approved by the House of Representatives in the previous month.
Democrats have thus far declined to back the short-term measure on federal operations unless Republicans consented to continue medical coverage assistance for economically disadvantaged citizens. Republicans have resisted, accusing Democrats of using government operations as leverage over separate political objectives.
"Without observing any advancement or some evidence of that by no later than the middle of this week, it becomes difficult to imagine how we would finish anything by the end of the week," the senior Republican informed journalists. "And I think that represents the goal here, which is attempting and reach an agreement that we could send to the lower chamber that would restart the federal operations."
In recent days, there have been signs that centrist opposition members and Republicans are eager to negotiate and find a deal ahead of Thanksgiving on 27 November.
