Far-Right Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's Incoming Head of State.
After a definitive final ballot, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Victory
After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Campaign Centered On Security and Migration
Recognized for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily centered on promises to tackle increasing crime and drastically curb migration.
He consistently pointed to immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an final demand for them to exit before the new term begins or face removal.
His proposals featured controversial measures such as constructing camps, barriers, security fences, and bolstering the military presence on the northernmost frontier.
Within a Continental Shift
Many analysts see Kast's win as aligning with a wider conservative shift in Latin America, following this year's electoral wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other experts also frame it as a continuation of the predictable alternation of power between left-wing and right leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Lacking a Strong Majority
In spite of his sweeping popular vote triumph, Kast is not expected to command an absolute majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if various conservative parties are combined together.
This legislative reality may challenge his policy goals, such as a vow to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not offered specifics.
"There are several questions about what a Kast administration will be that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for achieve them," said a political science analyst.
The professor stated, "In terms of economic policy, it is very likely we will see spending cuts common for the right. However where there is far less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
