The daughter of ex- South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror accusations at the start of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.

The defendant, forty-three, is being tried over comments she posted on online platforms several years back during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that came after the arrest of her dad.

A week of chaos in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including theft and arson, caused at least three hundred deceased and led to damage worth an projected $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

She has been alleged of inciting this violence and faces allegations of provocation to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.

Background of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were focused in the regions of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the former president's arrest for ignoring a legal directive to testify at an probe into accusations of corruption while he was in power.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always refuted the allegations against her, with her lawyer previously labelling the state's case as weak.

She has also repeatedly stated the allegations against her were an effort to settle political grievances with her dad after he founded his own political party and competed against the ANC.

Endorsement and Legal Defense

This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which said the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the ex-leader and his kin.

A few of supporters from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other group representatives attended the hearings inside.

The defense has stated that the testimony presented by government lawyers is inadequate and lacks concrete proof for a guilty verdict.

Main Aspects of the Legal Proceedings

  • Digital comments from the past form the basis of the state's argument
  • Fatal demonstrations in 2021 resulted in substantial casualties and financial damage
  • The accused confronts multiple counts of provocation to public disorder
  • Court trials are expected to continue for numerous court sessions

The court case continues as both sides present their cases before the judge in what is projected to be a closely watched court case with substantial politically charged consequences for South Africa.
