The co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed that parent company Unilever prevented the introduction of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company with his partner, disclosed that he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of an individual series showcasing causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company

This latest development deepens the continuing disagreement between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders have asserted how Unilever and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".

Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Support

The entrepreneur revealed through social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions for naming options and additional components.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism plus Current Developments

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that originally established in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Management Shifts plus Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen revealed that he plans to create other ice cream flavors that address issues that the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.

The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, following many years of involvement, citing concerns regarding how its independence had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Ben Cohen commented how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence so that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
