One can find many candidates to claim the designation as “world’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, however, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, building a modest trading ship necessitated around ten sawyers working for three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be produced within a week.”
Thanks to this rapid mechanical saw, that turned logs into planks using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders could build vessels faster than anyone else, an advantage that sparked a century of Dutch maritime, economic and artistic dominance in Europe and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s first authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part converted its circular movement into vertical action to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed that same rotary motion into a lateral motion advancing the timber toward the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log forward a measured step each cycle.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them so they acted in a perfectly controlled order, sawing on every descending motion while advancing on every upward stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever application of basic parts.”
