A senior Russian army officer has been killed following an explosion in Moscow, according to official statements.
The attack happened on Monday morning when an IED placed beneath a vehicle detonated, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.
The committee mentioned that one possible explanation suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has remained silent.
Site of the Blast
Personnel have been sent to the location, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the city.
Media coverage state the blast took place in a car park adjacent to a residential building.
Series of Targeted Attacks
Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military officials have been targeted within Moscow.
This latest event follows other high-profile incidents, for instance:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb placed on a scooter was detonated remotely.
While a Ukrainian source earlier attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are not formally acknowledged as a matter of official stance.
Hostilities has increasingly seen clandestine operations moving into the streets of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
